SHIMANO against the tampering of e-bikes

SHIMANO speaks out against any kind of manipulation of e-bikes and e-bike drive systems, e.g. to increase the performance or the maximum supported speed.

SHIMANO is united with the bike industry in supporting CONEBI, the confederation of the European Bicycle Industry, in their stance against anti-tampering of e-bikes.

We are committed to ensuring that all applicable anti-tampering requirements are met, both now and in the future, and we are working with the industry to raise awareness about this illegal practice.

These include continuous firmware updates to prevent tuning apps and hardware devices from being able to work with the SHIMANO STEPS e-bike system. We are also able to detect evidence of tuning in professional versions of our E-TUBE PROJECT application.

Through these actions we believe that we can help e-bikes in their continued growth as a mobility and exercise solution for thousands of people across Europe.

“The members of CONEBI speak out against any kind of manipulation of e-bikes and e-bike drive systems, e.g. to increase the performance or the maximum supported speed. Riding manipulated e-bikes on public roads may not only lead to technical problems but also result in serious legal consequences. Tampering kits and other types of manipulation can damage the drive system as well as the bike itself. Riders risk losing their guarantee and invalidating their warranty claims. If an accident occurs with a tampered e-bike, it may result in high liability costs as well as criminal prosecution.”

The SHIMANO e-bike system is designed for optimal functionality, with each component working together to deliver the ultimate riding experience. However, we know that there is a temptation for some to “tweak” their ride to get that extra perceived performance. These types of system modifications result in the bike no longer meeting the legal regulations for the intended use, which voids its warranty.

Luckily, there are ways to effectively increase your bike’s performance while keeping its reliability, longevity and safety intact – as well as its warranty in case something goes wrong.

Keep optimal tire pressure

Most tires display the tire pressure range on their sidewalls for easy reference. You can do some additional research to figure out the most effective pressure for your weight and riding style. This can help you to ride faster by having the ideal amount of traction where your power transfer is optimized. Keep in mind that higher pressure does not always mean increased speed.

Adjust your SHIMANO firmware settings.

Download our latest SHIMANO e-bike firmware via our E-Tube Project app to adjust your assist settings to sync your riding style. For the e-MTB systems it means that all three power-assist settings (Boost, Trail, Eco) are fully adjustable for that ultimate riding experience. Riding an E6100 or E5000-equipped bike  you can put the assist characteristics to SPORTIVE to add even more oomph to your daily commutes. You can check out our firmware page now to download our latest version and learn how settings adjustment can lift your game. If your system is not Bluetooth-enabled, visit your dealer for assistance.

Keep your bike clean.

The old saying that “a clean bike is a happy bike” goes way beyond the appearance of the bike. Components work a lot more effectively and efficiently when properly cared for.
